Glad I got off the fence on these. I was on the fence about ordering them ever since Custom Cans put out their YouTube video. I’m very treble sensitive, and heavy treble headphones usually don’t end up getting a lot of listening time from me. An XS mod that adds even more treble to my already bright XS?

But I thought to myself: “Self, you have a bunch of warm, bassy headphones. This looks really cool. You like modding. Why not give it a try?”

It ended up going very smoothly for me. I go very slow, take my time, double check everything, and still finished it in probably a half hour. I will say one thing about the installation. Be VERY careful putting the two-piece clips back in the front and replacing the screws. On one of these clips, there was a bit of a bulge. Very small. I started to ignore it and let the screws snug it up when I tightened them but decided to be extra cautious and take the clips back out. Turns out that thin black wire had found its way over one of the screw holes, dead center. If I’d have gone ahead and screwed that in… it probably wouldn’t have ended well.

One more caveat before I got into the sound. As of the time of this review, Custom Cans doesn’t have their own sheepskin pads available. Knowing I’d probably have the same treble issues Jason did, I picked up a set of sheepskin pads on Amazon.

Let’s get the comfort strap out of the way first… it’s awesome. I got the thicker one because I don’t like the way the other one looked in the video flopping around. Glad I did. This one stays in place great, but it’s a lot thicker than I expected. You probably can’t go wrong with either choice. Installing the comfort strap was a breeze.

Oh, and the grills are very sexy. I think Jason said in the video about 30% sexier. I might even go 35%.

The sound differences are hard to describe. I don’t hear treble spikes. I hear a bit of added detail, clarity, and soundstage. I’m one of those people who always hates the term “detail” because I end up hearing “detail” as pain. Treble boosts, as I mentioned before, are not my cup of tea. Whatever magic is going on here, it does not hurt my ears. I hear that extra detail without the pain, which I think is the only time in all my time with headphones that’s been the case.

This mod made me love my XS again, after it has been collecting dust on my wall for about a year.

Thank you to Custom Cans for bringing some tinkering fun and a bit of added listening enjoyment to my headphones.
