This is a DIY kit for the famous Frugal Horn MK3 which is CNC cut from the BB grade 18mm Birch Ply. The kit has been made specifically for people with minimal wood working skills and all the panels have recesses and grooves to make sure all the panels are perfectly aligned when constructed for the best possible sound. We could have made them from thinner lower grade materials or even MDF to get the cost down but if you are building some audiophile speakers like these I think it is worth spending the extra and getting the best. Being full range single driver speakers they do not need any crossovers so none of the audio signal is lost along the want and the horn design makes them much more efficient than sealed or bass reflex designs. This means they are ideal to use with Valve / tube amplifiers and Tripath T-Amps as you can get great sound from just a few watts of power. Another advantage of these for some people is that they are corner horns, designed to use the corner of a room to produce the lowest notes and sound their best in the corner.
If you are just building them to sound amazing then they are a quick job to put together – you can probably build both in less than an hour excluding the time waiting for glue to dry but if you want them to look their best you will have to put in a bit of elbow grease with a sander / sanding block or a router with a round over bit.
Even though they go together nicely I would say that you will probably still need to sand some of the joints to get them nice an smooth if you are thinking of putting a veneer or laminate over them. I went all round the edged of mine with a belt sander to smooth off the corners and get all the edges perfectly flush then painted them with wood primer then gloss paint.
The kit comes with all the panels to build 2 x Frugal-Horn MK3 cabinets for Markaudio Alpair 7.3 drivers to slot straight into them. The front baffles already have the holes recessed to fit the drivers flush for the best possible sound. In addition you will need some heavy felt damping, some fluffy sound absorbing material like pollystuff, kapok, wool or Twaron depending on your preference. You will also need some wood glue and G clamps to help construct them, drivers and some cable to wire up the drivers to your amp. Optionally you may also want to buy some speaker spikes and maybe some binding posts if you want detachable cables.
As you can imagine these kits are very heavy (roughly 35KG) so collection from Cheltenham would be best if possible but we can ship them via courier – Just let us know your address for a shipping quote.
If you have not come across the frugal horn before then check out this link FH3.html. They are an open source project to make an affordable easy to build full range horn speaker for use with the many of the latest 4″ and 5″ full range speakers from companies like Fostex and Alpair. To make these kits we have teamed up with one of the UK largest speaker cabinet makers to make sure they are made to the highest standard possible.
