Side by Side guide to telling the difference between fake pioneer HDJ 2000 and Real ones

Posted by JFunk on 19/04/2011 in Dismanteling and re building headphones |

Howdy… Here is a quick guide to help you tell the genuine article from the dodgy copys – I purchased a pair of HDJ-2000 from a Pioneer Authorised dealer and one pair from Alibaba.com where I managed to get a fake pair a bit cheaper than ebay. Unfortunately i ended up getting stiffed on the delivery which ended up costing £48 GBP for delivering a pair of headphones which cost £35 – Damn import duties – anyway I digress

At first glance the two boxes look the same but if you look closely the real ones look gray on the box where as the fake ones have a slight green and orange tinge – the hardboard is not as shiny as well

Fake HDJ-2000

The inner box is stamped like the original but not as crisp – the pioneer logo is very poos and unreadable

Pioneer replica HDJ 2000

The carry bag and packaging are almost identical with the same tags – on the fake ones the cable is in a plastic bag as well which the real ones did not

Unboxing pioneer HDJ 2000

I have herd reports that the logo on the headband is not quite right – if they wernt side by side it would be difficult to tell on these new ones but the N is a bit wonky and the finish is not as even on the fake ones – the real ones have a perfectly even shade of grey where as the fakes have lighter and darker patches around the edges of the letters.

Here they are side by side – you can see that the fake ones have a fatter headband pad but to the untrained eye they look the same

Fake and reak HDJ 2000 side by side

One thing you will spot is marks all over the hinges – this is more than likely where they have damaged the originals while pulling them apart to recast them.

Fahe pioneer HDJ-2000 hinges

The earpads are different as well as the headband pad – they are fatter on the fakes. This surprises me a bit because I would have thought the pads would have been the easiest part to fake.

Under the pads the drivers look very similar but if you look through the hole in the middle …. The real ones have a clear diaphragm with a silvery finish and the fake one are a milky colour

How to tell fake headphones frem real

Under the hood the drivers look pretty similar as does the DIN socket and mono switch board although the fake ones have less solder pads on the driver

Other notes… The hinges do not move smoothly on the fakes and do not “click” into position like on the real ones. The sound is OK on the fakes I would say they are as good as most $50 headphones and the noise cancellation is similar but the real ones do sound lovely and crisp with more detailed bass and better bass extension

I hope this helps when you are looking at buying some. As you can imagine it cost a few quid to make this guide any I ended up spending a months drinking money on fake headphones. If it has really helped feel free to buy me a pint

HD25-1 Driver repair experiment

Posted by JFunk on 08/02/2011 in Dismanteling and re building headphones |

I have come across a few pairs of HD25 with driver faults. Sometimes it’s just a lose connection and unplugging the cable and plugging it back in seems to fix it but sometimes the fault is more serious.

(DO NOT TRY TO REPAIR OR MODIFY HEADPHONES UNLESS YOU ARE SKILLED IN THAT SORT OF THING)

First of all I had no idea how the socket worked so a bit of an investigation was in order

1) Lifting up the cover

To get the grate/cover up just stick a small flat headed screwdriver in here ….. And levered it up

2) Under the hood

The socket is covered by a plastic cap

3) Remove the cap – DANGER MAKE SURE YOU MOVE THE VOICE COIL WIRES OUT OF THE WAY FIRST ( I broke the first one it tried )

The cap had a handy tab which you can get hold of with some small pliers. Pull gently out making sure not to damage the thin wires leading to the voice coil

4) How the socket works

Turns out the socket has two coiled springs inside linked which push up against the two gold posts either side. The prongs of the HPSC connector pushes in between the coils of the springs – this means that the problem can not be caused by lose contacts inside. The most likely cause is gunk / dust getting on the connection between the spring and the gold post.

5) The fix

There three options here depending on what is causing the issue

A) Oxidisation / fluf. The most common cause is a build up of oxidisation or gunk on the spring this can be fixed by using a small flat headed screwdriver to scratch / clean the dirt off the spring this can be done sometimes by just unplugging the connector and reinserting a few times – this can ware off the layer of oxidisation and can fix the issue without having to open the cup
B) The spring can get lose and cause a gap where the connector goes – to fix this just stick a small screw driver in the gaps at the end of the spring and twist it to make the gaps at the end bigger and make the gap in the midle where the connector goes in smaller and tighter.
C) if all else fails the voice could may have a lose connection to the pillars – you can solder it directly to the spring but I would warn that is is v-tricky and likely to fail so only try as a last resort

Hay presto….. Fixed

No more custom orders for a while

Posted by JFunk on 04/02/2011 in Uncategorized |

We are not taking any more custom orders for a while. We will be finishing the last batch over the next couple of weeks but will not be taking any more on tor the next couple of months.

Why you may ask????

Well… First of all we are making some new and exciting products for the summer ( think ghetto blasters on steroids ), We are also testing some new coatings and moving to a new industrial unit.

We are also working on a couple of secret projects for some big names which is exciting as well.

If you desperately need some custom headphones we may have some going on ebay as well

New Custom Deluxe HD25-c Cable now availavle

Posted by JFunk on 12/12/2010 in Technologys |

Here is a new exciting product. It is a replacement cable for the Sennheiser HD25-1 and addresses a few of the issues people get with the standard ones. The cable has chunkier HPSC connectors and uses high grade OFC copper cable giving better sound quality and diminishing the chance of knackering the spade connectors. These are now available in red or black. £50 for red and £45 for black
